The bloodlines of Hanover in New Zealand

July 2008

by Sue French

I've been looking back through old lists of foal names and I couldn't help but notice how the use of frozen semen has increased since the first few brave punters started with it at the end of the 90s.

The Hewittsons bred a Weltmeyer filly, born in 2000, and Judith and Peter of Matthews Hanoverians had bred successfully to De Niro and Gymnastic Star, using frozen semen that Judith imported from Kinnordy Stud in Australia. Altogether, that year, four frozen semen foals were born.

Since then, more breeders have ventured into this costly territory and to date, more than 100 NZ-bred Hanoverians owe their origin to the use of frozen semen, not to mention many others that have been bred by non-Hanoverian breeders.

Now that some of these horses are appearing in competition, or as dams of NZ-bred competition horses, it seemed to me timely to provide the non-breeders among us with some information about the bloodlines that have been used.
